Some friends put together a CNC machine and here’s a little bit of playing with it. The machine came in a kit from www.inventables.com. Kudos to JP at carv.co for picking up this nice toy and putting most of it together. The instructions were much better than I anticipated. The website is loaded with instructional details for even the smallest steps.

So that’s my first test of using a CNC machine. Even after the X-Carve has been set up, there is work left to do. The machine does not have a vacuum system. When the machine is in use, someone needs to manually suck up the wood shavings. Ideally there would be a vacuum good enough to allow the machine to run independently. The mounting brackets need to be implemented. In this example we used wood clamps, which means the Z-axis on the drill bit may have some variance. Also, a bigger selection of bits is needed. So…cool toy. I wish I could put one in my garage.
